Notes answers to no platform, no conglomerate, and no cause. It's a small, self-contained app that holds your notes — and does nothing else with them.

Kept free for two full years. Your encrypted workspace is retained for 24 months of inactivity before it is auto-deleted — and simply opening your notes on any device resets that clock, so an in-use workspace is never removed. A two-year retention window with no account, no email, and no payment is staggeringly generous next to what most free services offer — and it doubles as a privacy win: we don't hoard abandoned data forever.

Encrypted on your device — not even we can read it

Notes is end-to-end encrypted, the same posture as our ZeroTrust Drive: your notes are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it, and the server only ever stores opaque ciphertext.

The key never leaves your device. A 256-bit encryption key is derived on your device from your one secret — the raw secret and the derived key are never sent to our servers (the server only ever sees a separate, one-way-derived access token).
XChaCha20-Poly1305. Each note is sealed with a modern AEAD cipher from the same family WireGuard and TLS 1.3 use; its extended 192-bit nonce lets every save re-seal safely. The server can validate nothing about the contents — it only holds ciphertext.
Even the metadata is encrypted — not just the words. Titles, body, task‑done state, and the created / edited dates you see in the app all live inside the sealed blob. Most “encrypted” notes apps still keep timestamps, titles, tags or note counts in the clear so their servers can index and sort — we store one opaque blob plus a revision number, so the server can’t tell what a note says, how many you have, or when you created or last changed one.
We cannot hand over your notes — even under a court order. A subpoena of our servers yields encrypted gibberish; we do not have, and cannot be compelled to produce, a key we never received.
You hold the only copy of the key. That is the trade: there is no “forgot password” back door. Use the in-app sync link to carry your keys to another device — and keep a copy, because losing all of them loses the notes.

Your notes, your keys

No account, no login, no BigTech-owned profile. Your workspace is created the first time you open the app — every key is generated in your browser.

Two keys, both yours. A workspace ID and a workspace secret (unguessable UUIDs). From the secret your device derives two independent values: an access token sent to the server, and a separate encryption key that never leaves your device — so access control and content confidentiality use different keys, and the server gets only the former.
Trust-on-first-use. The first write claims your workspace; from then on only that secret can read or write it.
We never hold your secret. The server only ever sees the derived access token, and keeps just a salted hash of it — a database dump recovers neither your secret nor your encryption key — and writes are abuse-gated, not locked behind a paid account.
Reveal them when you need to. Both are hidden by default in the app; open “Keys & sync to another device” to view or copy a sync link.
